Sri Lanka is more than an exotic island.

Sri Lanka is not just a beautiful island in the middle of the ocean – it is a living teaching and spiritual center. This is one of the birthplaces of Buddhism, where the traditions of ancient cultures and the breathtaking natural beauty – lush rainforests, tea plantations, and endless ocean shores – exist in perfect harmony.

This day is about relaxation, arrival, and setting the mood for the trip, so that the next day we can start fresh to explore Sri Lanka's spiritual treasures.

DAY 2
ANURADHAPURA - MIHINTALE

Click for Details!

DAy 2 | ANCIENT CITY OF ANURADHAPURA AND MIHINTALE

After breakfast, we head towards Anuradhapura, passing by rice fields, coconut groves, pineapple plantations, rubber estates, and charming villages. Along the country roads, the rural life of the Sinhalese comes alive with pedestrians, colorful vendors, and bustling local markets accompanying our journey

We spend the morning exploring Anuradhapura – this ancient royal capital was the center of power in Sri Lanka for over a thousand years (from 380 BCE to the 11th century CE). Once overtaken by jungle and forgotten, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site where we can admire gigantic stupas, ancient temples, palaces, reservoirs, and monumental Buddha statues. We will visit the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi monastery, where we can also participate in a ceremony – this site is home to one of the world's oldest man-planted sacred trees.

MIHINTALE IS CONSIDERED THE BIRTHPLACE OF BUDDHISM IN SRI LANKA.

In the afternoon, we visit the sacred mountain of Mihintale, where according to tradition, the monk Mahinda, son of the Indian king Ashoka, introduced King Devanampiya Tissa to the teachings of Buddha. This place is still an important Buddhist pilgrimage site, featuring impressive stairways, ancient stupas, monasteries, and memorials. Although Mihintale is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is closely connected to the UNESCO World Heritage area of Anuradhapura, as one of the most important locations in the spread of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

This day is a special opportunity to travel back in time, explore the spiritual and cultural roots of Sri Lanka, and connect more deeply with the source of Buddha's teachings.

DAY 3: POLONNARUWA AND SIGIRIYA – THE LION ROCK

In the morning, we travel to Polonnaruwa, which became Sri Lanka’s second historical capital after Anuradhapura from the 11th to 13th centuries. At its peak, the city was the cultural and political center of the island, featuring magnificent palaces, temples, reservoirs, and monasteries. We admire the famous Gal Vihara rock temple, where four monumental Buddha statues are located: seated, standing, and reclining figures, representing the pinnacle of Sri Lankan stone carving. Polonnaruwa is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and deeply moves visitors with its unique atmosphere.

SIGIRIYA, THE LION ROCK AND THE ANCIENT PALACE CITY.

In the afternoon, we depart Polonnaruwa and head towards Sigiriya Rock, which rises in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya (Sinhagiri, "Lion Rock") is an impressive 200-meter-high granite rock formation that King Kashyapa built in the 5th century AD as the center of his new capital. At its summit once stood a magnificent palace, with famous frescoes decorating its walls. Along the way up, the Lion Gate is still visible, from which the site gets its name. Sigiriya is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best-preserved ancient examples of urban planning in the world. The panorama from the top of the rock is an unforgettable experience, with breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle and lakes.

DAY 4: SUNRISE AT PIDURANGALA AND DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLES.

Early in the morning, we climb the Pidurangala rock to greet the sunrise with meditation. This mountain is historically closely connected to Sigiriya. Once, the main monastery of the Buddhist monks was located here, and according to tradition, King Kassapa I paid his respects twice daily to the huge reclining Buddha on the mountain. The view from Pidurangala is not only breathtaking but also offers a clear sight of the Sigiriya rock bathing in the first rays of the sun.

DAMBULLA, THE TREASURE OF CAVE TEMPLES AND THE GOLDEN BUDDHA.

During the day we visit Dambulla, where the largest and best-preserved collection of Buddhist cave sanctuaries on the island can be found. The Dambulla cave temples and the Golden Temple are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than 80 caves are hidden in the mountain, but in the five main cave temples, we can admire impressive Buddha statues and murals that showcase various eras of Sri Lankan Buddhist art. Descending the slope, we reach the Dambulla Golden Temple, where the island’s sixth largest golden Buddha statue stands at the top.

The name Ella means "waterfall" in Sinhala, and indeed, the area is adorned with numerous stunning waterfalls.

We have the opportunity to travel a short section on the legendary Kandy–Ella railway line, known as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. DAY 9
KATARAGAMA

Click for Details!

Day: THE SACRED CITY OF KATARAGAMA

Our journey leads us to Kataragama, one of the island’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. This unique city has been a symbol of peaceful coexistence for centuries — visited by Buddhists, Hindu devotees, Muslims, and Christians alike. According to legend, it is the abode of the deity Skanda-Murugan, and it also plays an important role in Buddhist tradition. The rituals, offerings, and the profound atmosphere of devotion around the temple provide visitors with a special and touching experience. Here, one can feel a spiritual energy that transcends any single religion, emanating from human dedication and faith.

From there, we continue to the Sithulpawwa Monastery, hidden deep in the jungle and over two thousand years old. According to legend, it was founded by Arittha, a disciple of the Buddha, and in the past, thousands of monks lived and meditated here. The monastery’s caves carved into the rock and its whitewashed stupas emit a special silence and timeless peace. The spiritual ambiance of the place is still palpable today, as if the energy of ancient masters’ meditations remains within the walls.

We end our day in Tissamaharama, where the massive white Tissa Dagoba and the tranquil surrounding lakes await. This city was once the center of the ancient Ruhuna Kingdom and today stands as an important spiritual center for southern Sri Lankan Buddhism. The temples, lakeside walks, and early evening prayers create a deeply meditative atmosphere, perfectly preparing the soul for inner stillness.

Participation Framework and Nature

This program is not a tour organized by a travel agency but an intimate, community-oriented, and spiritual journey. We visit sacred places together that are the sources of teachings—places where these teachings were born and remain alive today.

The Bhávaná Buddhist Association is not a travel agency but a civil organization whose goals are:

  • Community development based on the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and mindful, environmentally conscious living,
  • deepening cultural diversity and understanding.

In this spirit, the Association organizes spiritual and community study trips and programs to facilitate deepening—not for commercial purposes but with the intention of raising awareness, self-knowledge, and learning.

The organization is conducted by a representative appointed by the Association, Attila András Sárdi, acting on its behalf as a volunteer.

2. Practical and Financial Conditions of Participation:

Participation involves several independent financial steps. The Bhávaná Association does not sell travel packages; costs are settled separately among the parties involved.
